Challenge

PFAS-contaminated groundwater at a former tannery in northeast Michigan ranged from 4,499 ppt (PZ-1C) to 7,193 ppt total PFAS (EW-2) in silty sands from 2–8 feet below ground surface. A pilot study was required to demonstrate treatment effectiveness and evaluate long-term concentration sustainability before full-scale remediation.

Approach

BAM Ultra was injected through 46 DPT locations using 4,445 gallons of treatment solution, covering the source area (EW-2, PZ-1) and providing downgradient monitoring coverage (PZ-1C). Long-term groundwater monitoring was conducted over three years to assess treatment durability.

Results

Within one week of BAM Ultra injection, PFOS concentrations were reduced 94% and PFOA 92% at the former tannery in northeast Michigan. At one year post-treatment, greater than 99% total PFAS reduction was confirmed with near non-detect results across source area monitoring points. Three years post-treatment, 86% reduction was maintained at EW-2, and continued improvements were observed at the downgradient monitoring point PZ-1C—demonstrating durable long-term performance of the BAM Ultra treatment across the 2–8 ft depth silty sand interval. The 46-point DPT injection program covering both the source area and downgradient monitoring zones was validated by the three-year monitoring dataset.
