Challenge

VOC and DNAPL contamination spread beneath an active four-lane underpass in a high-traffic urban corridor in Nebraska, requiring remediation with zero disruption to surface infrastructure. Complex subsurface geology with heterogeneous stratigraphy created barriers to uniform heating and contaminant recovery.

Site Conditions

  • Mixed Contaminants
  • Infrastructure & Access

Approach

In-situ thermal remediation using ET-DSP™ (Electro-Thermal Dynamic Stripping Process) combined with Steam Enhanced Extraction (SEE) was deployed to address both the complex geology and the infrastructure constraints. The in-situ approach allowed full treatment beneath the underpass without any surface disruption.

Results

A 99.3% reduction in all target contaminants was achieved using ET-DSP combined with Steam Enhanced Extraction beneath the active four-lane underpass in Nebraska, with greater than 99% system operational uptime maintained throughout the project. The in-situ thermal approach allowed full treatment of the VOC and DNAPL contamination spread across the heterogeneous subsurface geology without any disruption to surface traffic or infrastructure. The project was recognized by the EPA for outstanding performance, zero safety incidents, and exemplary execution quality.
