Groundwater at a former asphalt plant in central Mississippi was impacted by gasoline range organics (GRO), diesel range organics (DRO), crude oil, and petroleum volatile organic compounds (PVOC). A pilot study was designed to evaluate and compare two treatment approaches prior to full-scale implementation.
Two parallel pilot areas were established: one treated with BAM alone (IW-3) and one treated with a BAM plus VB591 nutrient blend (IW-2). DPT points were advanced around each well, and 2,740 gallons of treatment solution were injected using a side injection rod. A vacuum truck extracted groundwater from adjacent wells during injection.
Both pilot treatment approaches—BAM alone (IW-3) and BAM combined with VB591 nutrients (IW-2)—achieved 100% reduction in all target petroleum hydrocarbon compounds, including gasoline range organics (GRO), diesel range organics (DRO), crude oil, and petroleum volatile organic compounds (PVOC). Non-detect results were confirmed across three consecutive post-treatment sampling rounds at each pilot well. The parallel comparison demonstrated that BAM was the primary driver of treatment effectiveness, with nutrient addition not producing a measurable difference in outcomes at this former asphalt plant in central Mississippi. Results validated BAM as the recommended approach for full-scale implementation.
