Challenge

Effluent (1.2 MGD) from an industrial anaerobic digester was treated with ferric chloride for sulfide control, achieving only 88% H₂S reduction while simultaneously increasing total suspended solids (TSS) through ferric sulfide precipitation—resulting in surcharges from the receiving municipal WWTP.

Approach

Ferric chloride dosing was replaced with the AOTech process, which oxidizes sulfide without generating solid precipitates, addressing both the H₂S reduction deficit and the TSS increase simultaneously.

Results

AOTech’s treatment solution outperformed the prior ferric chloride program on every measured dimension. The program achieved a 97% reduction in sulfide levels and a 27% decrease in TSS discharge concentrations, directly eliminating monthly surcharge penalties and bringing the facility into full compliance. The results represent both an operational and financial win, demonstrating that improved environmental performance and reduced treatment costs are not mutually exclusive.
