Location
Approximately 9,120 cubic yards of TCE-contaminated soil at a former industrial plant in central Minnesota contained clay-bound contamination that resisted conventional treatment. Soil reuse and future commercial development required reduction to below 1.3 mg/kg TCE or TCLP compliance across the entire treated volume.
Ex-situ batch treatment was conducted in 570 cubic yard batches within contained 4-foot-depth treatment pits. Fenton’s Reagent (catalyzed hydrogen peroxide) was applied first to break apart clay aggregates and oxidize VOCs, improving BAM distribution. BAM was subsequently incorporated using a modified excavator with optimized mixing attachments.
An average post-treatment TCLP TCE concentration of 0.009 mg/L was achieved across all treated batches—well below the applicable regulatory threshold—from the 9,120 cubic yards of clay-bound TCE-contaminated soil at the former industrial plant in central Minnesota. Non-hazardous classification was obtained for the full treated volume, enabling the soil to be replaced on-site and the property to proceed to redevelopment. The site now operates as a multi-use commercial complex. The two-phase ex-situ treatment sequence—Fenton’s Reagent to break apart clay aggregates followed by BAM incorporation—was executed in 570 cubic yard batches within contained 4-foot-depth treatment pits.
