Challenge

Corrosion of an oil-water separator at an active locomotive service facility in northeast Illinois resulted in an LNAPL release to the subsurface, with 2.13 feet of free product measured in monitoring wells. Treatment was required with minimal disruption to ongoing railroad yard operations.

Approach

Nine DPT injection points (15–10 ft below ground surface) received a total of 550 gallons of calcium peroxide and catalyzed sodium persulfate. Three extraction wells with a vacuum truck extracted 1,300 gallons of contaminated groundwater during injection to provide hydraulic control and enhance treatment chemistry distribution.

Results

Free product was reduced from 2.13 feet of LNAPL in monitoring wells to non-detect within 72 hours of completing the treatment injection at the active locomotive service facility in northeast Illinois. Nine DPT injection points received 550 gallons of calcium peroxide and catalyzed sodium persulfate, while three extraction wells with vacuum truck support simultaneously removed 1,300 gallons of contaminated groundwater to provide hydraulic control. Residual calcium peroxide continues to release oxygen into the subsurface, providing sustained support for natural bioremediation of petroleum residuals in the post-treatment monitoring period. Treatment was completed with minimal disruption to ongoing railroad yard operations.
